Volunteer Spotlight: Eric Greene

Finding Connection in Quiet Moments

Eric Greene chose to volunteer at North Shore Animal League America as a way to explore his interest in working with animals and was immediately hooked. “I’ve always loved cats,” he shared. “I thought it would be a great place to get experience, and once I started, I just really enjoyed it and stuck with it.” Eric joined the organization through the VolunTEEN program as soon as he was eligible and has remained a dedicated volunteer ever since. Now 18, he continues to spend his weekends in Bianca’s Furry Friends Feline Adoption Center (BFF), working closely with cats of all personalities, especially those who need a little extra patience.

Recently, Eric has begun working with some of our more shy and sensitive felines, and helping them come out of their shells. “It’s amazing to see the progress,” he said. “There are cats I’ve been visiting for a long time, and you start to see them open up little by little.” While Eric enjoys helping guide adopters toward the right match, some of his favorite moments are the simplest ones. “Just being with the cats during quieter times — petting them, socializing — that’s definitely my favorite part,” he said.

Through his time at the shelter, Eric has also gained a deeper understanding of feline behavior. “Every cat has their own personality,” he explained. “You really see that when you’re around so many of them. They’re all different, and you learn how to read what they need.” That perspective has made him especially appreciative of Animal League America’s no-kill mission. “It was one of the biggest reasons I chose to volunteer here,” Eric said. “Animals get the time they need, even if they don’t have the most commonly sought-after personality.”

Eric also appreciates that volunteering is not only about helping animals, it’s also a chance to slow down and reconnect. “It’s a time where I can relax and just focus on the cats,” he said. And for anyone considering getting involved, his message is simple: “It’s definitely worth trying. Even if you’re hesitant, it’s such a rewarding experience — for the animals and for you.” Thank you, Eric, for your compassion and commitment to helping our cats feel safe, understood, and ready for their future homes.
